a little PSA for parents who are confident that their child is autistic, or the child has just been diagnosed: do not refrain from telling them. just do it.
i hear a lot of stories from my friends about how their parents didn’t tell them at first, sometimes for years, because “we didn’t want you to feel different”. guess what? we already feel different. in every social situation, neurotypicals just know we’re not like them within the first second of meeting us; even if they’ve never heard of autism, they just subconsciously know something is off. we are treated differently as a result, we are very often ostracised and undermined. and without awareness of autism, we don’t know why. and when no one and nothing is there to tell us why, we think we’re doing everything wrong and we don’t know what is “right”, let alone how to do it. we internalise everything and our self esteem and self-image crumbles. we can fall into severe depression and anxiety. the second most common cause of early death in autistic people is suicide. (the first is epilepsy)
maybe some of what i just wrote is more me than ‘we’, but i know many people relate to this. please, for the love of the gods, tell your autistic child they’re autistic. they already know they are different, just from existing in society.
